Transport

Traveling by train—what's in it for you?

I understand what's at stake

Metropolitan France has an extensive rail network, and many local authorities have developed complementary transportation options (buses, electric bikes, etc.) to cover the last few kilometers between the train station and your vacation destination.

Much of Europe is accessible by train in less than 12 hours from Paris. And for longer trips, night trains are gaining popularity.

The TGV is by far the mode of transportation with the lowest carbon footprint: less than 3 kgCO2e per 1,000 km! Older trains aren’t far behind, at 9 kgCO2e per 1,000 km.

It’s also a comfortable way to travel, since you can stretch your legs, sleep, work, play, and enjoy a meal… all away from the stress of traffic jams.

Taking action

A few tips for planning your train trip:

  • Use Hourrail to find destinations that are easy to reach by train.
  • Check with the tourist office about local transportation options: bike-sharing, shuttles, etc.
