Transport

Have you measured the impact of your travels?

I understand what's at stake

Over the past two generations, air travel has become relatively common (at least for part of the population): the cost of tickets and a general encouragement to “see the world” have contributed to the explosion in global aviation emissions.

But with the planet warming rapidly and significantly, it’s time to make some trade-offs. Not all flights are equal: there’s a world of difference between an occasional round-trip to visit family abroad (less than 20% of flights in France) and quick weekend getaways to the other side of Europe. And there are many metric tons of CO2 to be saved.

Every flight avoided is a step toward a more sustainable climate future.

The carbon footprint of air travel compared to other modes of transportation

Taking action

Let’s save air travel for essential trips where there’s no alternative—like visiting family or taking the trip of a lifetime.

Here are a few great tips for traveling without significantly increasing your carbon footprint. In Europe:

  • Interrail lets you travel anywhere by train with very affordable passes.
  • Night trains are making a big comeback: to find out which destinations are accessible, click here.
  • EuroVelo routes let you cross Europe from north to south and east to west along signposted paths. In and around France:
  • GreenGo is a pioneer in sustainable tourism and offers destinations for trips with a low carbon footprint.
  • Hourrail helps you plan your train adventures.
