Buying an electric vehicle: What are the benefits?
I understand what's at stake
The carbon footprint of our car trips is the sum of two components:
- the carbon footprint of the vehicle’s manufacturing
- the carbon footprint of its use (the energy consumed to power the vehicle)
A gasoline-powered car has a smaller manufacturing footprint than an electric car: on average, about half the CO2e emissions. But when it comes to the footprint from usage, the electric car wins hands down, with a footprint per kilometer traveled that is one-tenth as large (that is, in France).
Ultimately, over its entire life cycle (from manufacturing to end of life), the electric car has by far the lowest impact on the climate.
So if you’re planning to buy or replace a vehicle, consider going electric!
