Alternative ways to get around: How can you encourage people around you?

I understand what's at stake

To discover a new way of getting around, having a friend or family member introduce you to it is often the best place to start. They can share their favorite spots, offer tips based on their experience, and explain all the benefits you can gain from trying a different way to get around.

Here are a few ideas to try:

  • Riding a bike to work or school for the first time: this involves finding the safest and most enjoyable route, estimating your travel time, knowing how to gear up for a comfortable ride, and knowing how to park your bike securely.
  • Using a car-sharing service for the first time: this involves creating an account, possibly downloading an app, feeling comfortable with the check-in and check-out procedures, and knowing how to operate the available vehicles.
  • Renting a bike from a bike-sharing service for the first time: this usually involves creating an account, knowing how to select the right bike, and planning where to return it.
  • Taking the train with your bike for the first time: this requires buying the right ticket and knowing the most accessible ways to get to the platform.
  • Setting out on your first bike tour: this requires basic gear (panniers or a trailer, a tent for camping, etc.), carefully estimating the distances to cover each day, and planning safe routes.

What if you were the loved one who helps them discover one or more of these options for daily commuting or travel?
