Ultra-processed food: Why give it up?
I understand what's at stake
Food processing is a resource- and energy-intensive process. It requires:
- Raw materials (and energy) to manufacture its packaging
- Energy:
- to process the food (cutting, heating, etc.), but energy will also be needed if this step is done at home
- to preserve the product (temperature control: from freezing to simply preventing significant temperature fluctuations throughout the distribution chain)
- to transport the food between various processing sites
- to collect and then recycle the packaging
In terms of health, Santé Publique France points out that these foods are often high in energy density and low in nutritional quality, and that recent studies have shown links between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and an increased risk of various chronic diseases.
Taking action
- Replace gradually: substitute one processed product per week with a homemade equivalent or one made by an artisan producer
- Check the seasonal fruit and vegetable calendar to cook with fresh produce
- Read Santé publique France’s recommendations on ultra-processed foods
