How to reduce your water heater's energy consumption?
I understand what's at stake
The water heater is one of the biggest energy consumers in a home, second only to the heating system. With simple steps and good daily habits, you can save one-third of the electricity used by an electric water heater.
Taking action
- Install an insulating cover around the water heater to prevent the water from cooling down quickly. It’s very easy to install and highly effective, especially if your water heater is located in an unheated space such as a cellar, garage, or basement.
- Install flow restrictors on all the faucets in your home. This will help you reduce hot water usage without sacrificing comfort.
- Set your water heater’s thermostat to 55°C. This is the ideal temperature to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the water. You can usually adjust this setting directly on your water heater.
What's in it for me?
Domestic hot water accounts for up to 20% of a household’s energy consumption, or about €270 per year. Every year, nearly one-third of the heat produced by our water heater is lost. This loss amounts to an average of €85 per year, which could be saved by following these simple steps.
