Using your electric appliances at the right time
I understand what's at stake
In France, a large portion of our electricity is generated using energy sources that emit few greenhouse gases: nuclear power plants and renewable energy. The carbon footprint of one kWh is therefore relatively low.
However, we must continue to manage our consumption whenever possible and be aware that the most favorable times vary depending on the season and the electricity plan you’ve signed up for:
- In winter, it’s best to run your appliances outside of peak consumption hours (in the morning before 11 a.m. and in the late afternoon until 8 p.m.). Why? Because demand for electricity is high due to electric heaters, and during periods of extreme cold, it may be necessary to restart gas-fired thermal power plants to generate electricity.
- In the summer, it’s best to turn on your appliances in the afternoon to take advantage of the peak in solar power generation.
Taking action
To avoid consumption spikes that require high-carbon power generation, it’s highly advisable to sign up for a plan that offers peak and off-peak rates and to optimize your energy usage to take full advantage of off-peak hours.
Check with your provider for more information.
What's in it for me?
Contracts that offer peak and off-peak rates are financially advantageous if you can shift a large portion of your electricity usage to off-peak hours.
