Consumption

How can you make sure a purchase will actually be useful?

I understand what's at stake

In many homes, objects pile up without ever really being used. This accumulation takes a heavy toll on both our finances and the environment, since energy and resources were expended to manufacture items that ultimately go unused.

Avoiding cluttering our homes with unused items also improves our well-being. We can find what we’re looking for more quickly and regain space.

Taking action

Do you feel like your home is too cluttered with stuff? Why not take some time to declutter a little? (in French)

Once you’ve done that, here are some tips to avoid letting clutter build up again:

  • Before buying anything, always ask yourself if this new item will actually be useful and if you really like it
  • Ask yourself if you could rent or borrow it instead, if it’s only for occasional use
  • Adopt the “one in, one out” rule: for every new item you buy, one item must leave your home
  • Offer useful gifts (either intangible or from a wish list): it would be a shame to declutter your own space only to clutter up someone else’s!
