Ferry hours in the year

Question for the user

How many hours have you spent on a ferry?

Input help

For cruising use, estimate the number of hours spent travelling during the cruise (most of the time, these journeys take place at night).

If you're more familiar with the distance covered, you should know that on average, a cruising boat travels at a speed of around 20 knots, or almost 40 km/hour. So it takes 10 hours to cover 200 nautical miles, or 400 km.

Notes

For the moment, we are not taking into account the options that can increase or reduce the footprint of a ferry crossing:

  • having a car on board
  • filling the cabin or reserving a seat
  • use of on-board services (restaurant, shops)
  • and, of course, the speed of the boat (the faster the boat, the more fuel it consumes).

The calculation is therefore based on a typical crossing.

According to SDES figures most ferry journeys are made on the Channel / North Sea, which can be approximated to "Cherbourg-Poole" journeys (8h return).
