Calculate your climate footprint in 10 minutes top time.

✈️ Aircraft

The aircraft's footprint is substantial. It is not necessarily more polluting per kilometre than a car that only moves one person, but the distance, and especially the distance covered in an hour (commonly referred to as speed), means that you can change continents for a weekend.

We should also bear in mind that the average French person takes few or no flights. Most of the aviation footprint is therefore concentrated on 10% or less of the French population.

For the definition of flight ranges, from short-haul to long-haul, we use this discussion from the Base Carbone forum.

Notes

We have chosen to ask for the total number of flight hours, rather than asking the user to fill in each of his flights via the departure and arrival airports and the economy class. This is a possible evolution later, see this simulator where part of the work is already done.

Note also that stopovers lead to additional takeoffs, which consume more fuel than a cruising speed. This is also a parameter to take into account later.

For a more detailed model of the aircraft's footprint, we found two sources.

The complete algorithm of the North app, available here.

The pseudo-algorithm from myclimate.org, below.
