Whilst we previously calculated a carbon footprint saving for this action, we have decided to stop doing so, as the latest studies on long-distance car-sharing show that the potential carbon footprint savings are entirely offset by the rebound effect. In other words, the carbon footprint reduction achieved by the driver who takes on an extra passenger is offset by the increase in the carbon footprint of those passengers, who would have used public transport had they not car-shared, or indeed, would not have travelled at all. The full study can be found here.
